The Modi government has made major changes in public distribution system (PDS) during its tenure. Earlier, farmers, poor and other beneficiaries were benefited from government schemes as a subsidy. But, the allegations continue to be that the beneficiaries do not get the full benefit of the schemes under it. But, the Modi government decided to direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) in the PDS system. All the beneficiaries will get the benefits of the schemes in their bank account. This reduced corruption and the government also got the benefit.
According to a report, till December 31, 2018, the government has left around 1.1 lakh crore due to DBT. During this time the government removed about 8 crore fake beneficiaries from the list. Now, the benefits of all government schemes are available through direct transfer in your bank account. To get the benefit of every scheme, it has been linked to the base. With the help of Aadhaar, fake beneficiaries were identified and they were removed from the list.
It is clear from this report that the data currently present with the government is updated. There is little scope for fraud. On the other hand, the government is thinking of implementing the Universal Basic Income (UBI). Experts say that if implemented, the benefit will be sent to beneficiaries account through DBT.
The scrutiny of the old records shows that till March 31, 2018, the government had left 90 thousand crore rupees due to DBT. In this way, the government is saving about Rs 20,000 crore every year.
