KANPUR: Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) on Wednesday imposed a fine of over Rs 10 lakh on a tannery in the city for operating during the three-month closure for Kumbh

UPPCB member secretary Ashish Tiwari said that the order had been dispatched to the tannery, which has been asked to pay the fine within 15 days in the board’s account. If the tannery fails to comply with the order, the board will not only report the matter to the National Green Tribunal (NGT), but also initiate the proceedings of recovery of fine like land revenue recovery.

UPPCB chief environment officer TU Khan told TOI on Wednesday that the state government had ordered closure of all tanneries of Jajmau during Kumbh for about three months. A team of UPPCB and district administration, which had conducted a random checking on April 9, found that the said tannery was operating during the closure period.

Kanpur regional office of UPPCB had recommended penal action after the inspection and the board thereafter imposed the fine.

Meanwhile, a team of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) also made a random survey on Tuesday and collected samples form common effluent treatment plant (CETP) and pumping station. The four-member team, constituted by the district magistrate, had also visited CETP and pumping stations and found tannery effluent.

The team also observed that the 5 MLD sewerage treatment plant was closed at the time of inspection and submitted its report to the district magistrate.

During the inspection, it was found that 130 and 43 mld sewerage treatment plants were not getting the standard quantity of sewerage.

While Wajidpur, Budhia Ghat and Sheetla Bazar pumping stations were carrying tannery waste, tannery water was also being received at CETP.

The team suggested that CCTV cameras installed at all pumping stations should be linked with UPPCB portal. It also suggested that electro-magnetic flow meters should be installed at all pumping stations and CETPs and connected with the servers of CPCB and UPCB.
